Tour de Turtles: Saving Sea Turtles is a Marathon, Not a Sprint
/Turtle nesting season is in full swing! One amazing thing about sea turtles is that they migrate thousands of miles to nest on the same beach where they were born. They have a built-in GPS and use the earth’s magnetic field to pinpoint specific spots on the coastline to breed.
Lazy Turtle is delighted to sponsor the Sea Turtle Conservancy’s Tour de Turtles: a fun, educational journey through the science, research, and geography of sea turtle migration using satellite telemetry. This event follows the migration of sea turtles, representing several different species, from their nesting beaches to their foraging grounds.
Sea turtles will be tracked for approximately three months as they leave their respective nesting beaches and race to complete a turtle marathon. The Tour de Turtles competitors will swim with the goal of being the first turtle to swim the furthest distance during the migration journey.
Lazy Turtle is proud to announce the launch of a limited-edition Sun Safe shirt for men and women, celebrating the 2019 Tour de Turtles. This shirt has the same lightweight, quick dry features you love from our entire Sun Safe collection, has a natural SPF of 50, and is made here in Florida. Additionally, this limited-edition design features the exclusive Tour de Turtles logo, and as always, each purchase helps to save sea turtles.
Want to see the Tour in action? You can join Lazy Turtle and the Sea Turtle Conservancy at one of several live turtle releases at various spots throughout Florida and the Caribbean. The tour kicks off near our home beach of Naples on Anna Maria Island on June 21. After that, track the turtles to the following locations as they begin their journey:
